I am resending this email to remind everyone that the deadline for a reduced rate on registrations to Pro-Bike/Pro-Walk is August 1.

There are still DOT scholarships available for both individuals and communities (for public employees below the state level.) DOT really wants to give that money away, so I hope they get a wave of applications!

Below is the following information:

Reminder about Pro-Bike/Pro-Walk Conference, Madison, September 5-8, 2006
A wonderful chance to learn more about all aspects of biking and walking will be the biennial PBPW 2006 conference. This is a multi-disciplinary conference, including traffic engineers, public health officials, tourism departments, advocates, politicians, and local business associations. Biking and walking is a hot topic, and this is the best way to both learn and network with others. We expect about 500-700 people from across North America, and beyond.

This conference happens every two years, and in the past has been in Santa Barbara (CA), Philadelphia, St Paul, and Victoria (British Columbia), so we are lucky to have it so close to home.

More information on the conference can be found at
http://www.bikewalk.org/conference/index.html

The Wisconsin Bicycle and Pedestrian Summit will be held at the same time. Information on that meeting can be found at both of these sites

Scholarships available, but they are going fast
If the cost of the conference is a concern, fear not! There are scholarships available from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Municipalities and other government bodies can apply for employees to attend, and the more different departments that come, the more money you can receive. Individuals can also apply. Advocates and local citizen organizers are especially urged to apply. But you need to act fast. The price for the conference goes up on August 1, and the scholarships are going fast.

More information and the applications can be found here:

More ways to save money at the conference
Yes, it may seem pricey to attend this conference, but think how much you are going to save on travel costs and time over traveling to the east or west coast. You can also get a free place to stay. Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin is organizing "home stays" for people that would rather stay with a local person than a hotel. That means no accommodation expenses either. We can't guarantee all the comforts of a hotel room, but you will get a chance to chat with and have the local knowledge of a local person who shares your interests.

To request a match for a home stay, please contact Bicycle Federation at 608-251-4456 or [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(If you live in Madison, and would be willing to put someone up, please contact Bicycle Federation as well.)

I hope to see plenty of new faces at this conference. The amount of knowledge and exchange of ideas is too much to pass up. All of us that have been working on making our communities more pedestrian and bicycle friendly, for whatever reason, really should try to get as many people as possible to attend. Ask your local government, health agency, citizen advocates, or business people to come join us.

Let me know if you have questions!
