When I lived in Colorado and biked a lot on Hwy 9 between Breckenridge
and the Gore Range trails, I tied a ski pole across my handlebars so the
steel point stuck out about 3 feet, and added a fluttering red or orange
flag to the basket. That helped prompt the county board to build a nice
bike trail to the Dillon area. Anyone brushing against the pole would
have knocked me into the ditch, and that being the era before bike
helmets, the results would have been not good. Fortunately cars swung
wide.

More than a year ago, someone posted a message about flags that stick
out to the *side* of the bike to discourage motorists from shaving the
cycle when passing. Does anyone remember the web page for ordering these
flags?
