Kathryn, I think I know the side flags you are talking about so I went downstairs to my parts archives to look for the one I used to use. It had a simple bracket that clamped on to my Blackburn rack that allowed the flag to pivot forward when not in use. The stalk itself was black plastic with a 4" orange retro-reflective triangle that hung from it. It Seems to me it may have been spring mounted also. I couldn't find it but to my surprise I found two others. I must have really liked the idea 20 years ago.
One has a nylon clamping bracket riveted to the orange I-beam stalk with a 2-2/3"plastic red/rear, white/front reflector inserted in the end. the bracket has a little stopper to keep it from rotating downward on the horizontal rod or tube to which it is mounted. It is has molded into it "DBS-Made in Norway".
The second one(unopened) must have been a First Wisconsin Bank giveaway. The header card says "Saf-t wing". It has a bracket that is not riveted onto the stalk like the first one. It is a separate piece with two sizes of rubber shims and the instructions show it mounted to the left chain stay. It has a red/white reflector 2" in diameter inserted into a 4-1/4" orange disc at the end of a 14" stalk. These are mounted to the bike by tightening the clamp with self-tapping screws, not rocket science and not the most reliable on their own considering the vibrations that a bike will experience. If you procure and use one of these gizmos, make absolutely sure that they in no way interfere with the full operating functions of your bike, (no going into spokes or hitting the ground or or catching on something as you go by, they are one piece molded stalks about 1/2" square that expand to a much larger size at the end). As I think about this the one I used would be much safer, and lighter. The heaviest of these is about 1/4 pound. The plastic flag flaps in the wind. I remember seeing them when I was driving a car behind and they appeared to be a strobe. the plastic would also tear away if it caught on something.
Well that was more than you wanted to know, I'm sure. There certainly were no e-mail addresses when I got these but the bank giveaway one has some info;
SAF-T Corporation
740 12th Street
Wilmette, Illinois
60091

I applaud anything that gets us from A to B with the rubber side down. Even if it makes one feel more comfortable or contented on the bike it is worth it. I haven't seen one in years, I may have to consider designing one myself. Thanks for jogging my memory.

More than a year ago, someone posted a message about flags that stick out to the *side* of the bike to discourage motorists from shaving the cycle when passing. Does anyone remember the web page for ordering these flags?

THANK YOU - I sent mail to the mayor & my council member & I will be at the
meeting on the 23rd. Unfortunately this comes as NO surprise to me, the NYPD
has been trying to find way to harass cyclists because of cycle activism like
Critical Mass
I hope the City Council will listen to numbers....

Hello New Mobility network -
Decisionmakers in NYC need to hear from more people around the
world ASAP - we have just a couple of weeks to respond to new
walking/cycling rules that leave us all subject to arrest -

On July 18th, 2006 the New York City Police Department quietly
proposed changing City parade permit rules.
