Dear Friend of Jessica Bullen:
Im writing you today to let you know about a memorial project that the folks at Quann Gardens in Madison are putting together to honor Jess Bullen. Because you have made a contribution to the Jessica Bullen Memorial Fund at the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, I thought that you might be interested in knowing about the memorial at Quann and in giving some input into its design.
A website describing the project is located at http://www.madison.com/communities/quanngarden/pages/jessmemorial.php?php_page_set=0
There is also a link to this site from the Bicycle Federations Jessica Bullen page at http://www.bfw.org/about/jessicabullen.php
The memorial will be in the triangle of land across the gravel road from the community gardens. Their web page will be updated frequently with design information through spring, 2007. Contact Jim Winkle if you'd like to be notified of major updates ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
There will be two design charrettes led by Sam Dennis, professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at UW-Madison:
Sat, Sep 30, 10-11:30 am -- Generate ideas for Sam; he will then take these ideas and turn them into designs over the next several weeks. Location: Villager Mall, Suite 1 D, 2300 South Park Street.
Sat, Nov 11, 10-11:30 am -- Look at the designs, fine-tune and finalize them. Location TBD.
If you can't make the first gathering, they would still love your input. Contact Barbara at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 843-2272 with your ideas and memories of Jess. Recollections and stories will help guide the design of the project.
As for the work that the Bicycle Federation is doing to honor Jess, it includes the following:
1. The Ghostbikes.net Campaign (visit http://www.bfw.org/projects/ghostbikes.php). The final week of June in 2006, BFW staff and volunteers in Dane County posted 500 Ghostbikes.net signs to remind motorists to watch for bicyclists and to direct them to educational information about sharing the road. The campaign received massive media coverage, including every newspaper and television station in Madison. Weve been contacted by people all over the country who heard about the campaign. BFW plans to expand the campaign to other cities in the future and to run Ghostbikes.net billboards in Dane County in 2007.
2. StreetShare Project. (visit http://www.bfw.org/projects/motoristeducation.php ). BFW, in partnership with the Safe Community Coalition of Madison and Dane County, launched a share the road campaign in 2006. This pilot project was funded through a generous grant from the Viking Biking Club (funded utilizing a portion of the profits generated on a yearly basis by the Horribly Hilly Hundreds challenge ride), through the memorial donations of the friends and family of Jessica Bullen, and through a grant from the Dane County Executive's office funded by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. To date the project has included overtime grants for law enforcement to enforce bicycle-related violations (against both motorists and bicyclists), the publication of a special group bicycling riding newsletter that was distributed to rides statewide, share the road articles in small local papers throughout Dane County, and the production of two television public service announcements (which will run starting in June 2007 with paid media placement) directed at motorist yielding to bicyclists and passing at a safe distance.
Trail Memorial: Bicycle Federation and Jesss friends are working with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to get a trail named after Jess.
Thank you once again for your contribution to the Jessica Bullen Memorial Fund. We all miss her, but her work goes on. She will not be forgotten.
Sincerely,
Dar Ward, Executive Director, Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, 608-251-4456, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
