I'll second that.

This should concern anyone interested in promoting transit in Dane county.  You need to speak up if you want anything to happen.  Otherwise, sprawl will continue unabated and Madison can look to Milwaukee, its suburbs and the Marquette Interchange as its future.

On Wednesday Oct. 4 @ 5:00 p.m. in the Monona Terrace Hall of Ideas (Rms. F & G) the Madison Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is having a Public Hearing on its transportation plan called 2030.  That plan only gets updated every 5 years and is basically the same plan that was originally written in 1997 called Vision 2020.  Beside gratuitously throwing bones to bicyclists and pedestrian advocates the plan is to widen such roads as Lien Rd., Femrite Drive and Fish Hatchery.  In most cases, roads get widened to four lanes, two each way, sometimes with a divide.  Lien becomes a 6-lane freeway.  The gratuitous bone is that bike lanes are supposed to be included so bicyclists can inhale auto fumes.  Look at http://www.madisonareampo.org/regional_comprehensive_plan_2030.htm

One of the positions of Madison Area Bus Advocates is that no significant transportation improvement should be undertaken without a serious examination of transit facilities.  Capacity problems in the overall transportation system should be addressed with increased transit service before an road widening.  Let congestion get worse and let people sit in their bank-owned Single Occupancy Vehicles as buses or trains and yes, bicycles, whiz by using transit-ways and bike ways.  In fact, if we aspire for a reduction in traffic (say 20% in 10 years) we can make this area even better.  Simply widening roads only invites more congestion down the line and life worse for everyone--get people out of their cars.

To the cry of no funds (remember there were funds to widen roads) tell them that a priority is getting a regional transit authority that provides dedicated funds for transit throughout this area.

Tell planners that we want leadership!
