A Complete Streets is probably the most basic of the suggestions that will come up during the Madison Mayor's Go Platinum Task Force...which has it's first meeting in November.
Incidentally, Alder Robbie Webber recently tried to get Complete Streets language into the Long Range Transportation Plan...it's in limbo...
We sent an action alert out on it last on October 4th:
Madison area only action alert:
In early September the Madison Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) agree to add Complete Streets language to the Goals and Objectives summary of its Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) update, based on a motion by the Madison Common Council representative to the MPO, Robbie Webber. However, when the document was produced, the language was not present. The RTP is currently undergoing public review. For more information, visit http://www.ci.madison.wi.us/mpo/regional_comprehensive_plan_2030.htm
Complete Streets policies ensure that the entire road right of way is routinely designed and operated to enable safe access for all users: including pedestrians, bicycles, transit, cars. More information on Complete Streets is available at www.completestreets.org
What can you do?
Before October 18th, write to Madison Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and ask that Complete Streets language be included in the Regional Transportation Plan update.

Can Madison do this? If not, why not?

Subject: Chicago Releases Complete Streets Policy (10.16.06)
The city of Chicago today released a landmark Complete Streets Policy that for the first time mandates that all users must be accommodated in all transportation projects. This will save lives, said Chicagoland Bicycle Federation Executive Director Rob Sadowsky. According to a multi-agency document issued by the city, the policy is expected to be implemented in a variety of ways that have been advocated by Chicagoland Bicycle Federation and its Healthy Streets Campaign. The policy calls for pedestrian improvements like bulb-out curb extensions for crosswalks, countdown crossing signals, median refuges and re-timing signals to minimize pedestrian delay and conflicts.
