Many of you may have noticed that the city cracked filled a number of bike
paths within the past two months. This pavement maintenance and
preservation effort is welcome and much needed. The city has been doing
crack filling on streets for a number of years. Filling the cracks lengthens
the life of the pavements and in the case of bikes makes the long-term ride
smoother.

What is not apparent is a parallel city effort that is rating the bike path
pavements on a system of 1 to 10 - with 10 being the best. I'm not sure the
number of paths that have been rated, but there are quite a few. This will
help city engineering staff in decision-making on how the best maintain path
pavements, resurface them and/or replace the path pavements in a timely
manner.

Path pavement maintenance efforts have finally been brought up to the
same level as streets. That's good. (Unless you don't like streets.)
