Governor Doyle should be invited to this seminar, too. He obviously
still favors motor vehicles to more use of nonmotorized vehicles.
Otherwise, wouldn't he tell his DOT Secretary to fund more bicycle
paths and fewer highway expansions?

What he doesn't seem to understand that excessive use of personal
motor vehicles is a big reason why the climate is warming, why sea
level is rising, why storms are becoming stronger, etc., and why air
quality alerts are called. He doesn't seem to understand that
promoting greater use of nonmotorized travel (bicycles, walking) and
mass transit, as an alternative to personal automobile driving, could
be a big part of the solution to these problems, but that the window
is closing for him to do something about this. Maybe if someone
besides me would tell him that, he might consider listening?

Then again, maybe the governor's preferences can be explained more by
the fact that he received campaign contributions from the Wisconsin
road and bridge builders, but not the Wisconsin bicyclists, walkers
and bus riders?

Please join us at 6 p.m. this evening in AB20 Weeks Hall (Geology's
seminar
room) for a guest seminar presented by Jim White, Fellow of Institute
of
Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR),
Professor of Geological Sciences, and Director of the Environmental
Studies
Program at the
University of Colorado at Boulder. Dr. White is on the Science
Advisory
Board of the Ice Core Drilling Services.

What everyone needs to know about climate change, and how to tell your
friends, neighbors, and even strangers. Ever ask yourself: Is climate
changing? Are we causing climate to change? The answers are yes, and
yes.
But how do we know that? And how do I translate that darn Science-ese
into
English? Come hear the answers and learn what everyone should know
about
their home planet. The times (and climate) are changing fast. We're
all part
of the problem, but we're also the solution. We all need to be
informed, so
come educate yourself and learn how to educate others.
