Here's a nice little snippet that I found while searching an archival
database of newspapers. This article comes from page 4 of the Wisconsin
Rapids Daily Tribune, Tuesday, September 13, 1960. The more things change.

BICYCLE RIDERS VULNERABLE

As every motorist knows, the sight of a

bicycle on the street or highway is a sign of

possible danger. It behooves -the driver to

give the cyclist extra room and to slow down

lest the unpredictable happens. One expects

the unpredictable, for cyclists often ride

crazy-like, weaving from side to side swinging

wide, paying little heed to traffic.

In other words, the bicycle is treated as a

toy. though it is ridden on the street where

every vehicle must take and keep its proper

place. There is no place for irresponsible

cyclists these days,'.whether the rider is 7

or 70.

As the child grows it is natural for the parents

to want to start him off with a tricycle,

then to a two-wheeler. But they had better

make sure that he understands that the street

is no place for playthings, for toys or for

wobbling cyclists.

A bicycle is a vehicle and its rider is subject

to ail the safety laws of the road. At the

same time he is 100 times more vulnerable

to serious injury in an accident than the

driver of a car. - Janesville Daily Gazette
