Dear local bike advocate crazies:
I've been off list for almost a week, so I've no idea if this has been posted
yet. I just wanted to let you all know that I was fired as Executive Director
of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin on Monday afternoon.

While I do not agree with the decision nor the the process used to execute
it...I urge you all to throw your full support behind the remaining Bike Fed
staff. They are true warriors in this battle for bikes...and they are all good
hearted, dedicated people who are overworked and underpaid. A better group of
people I have never met.

While BFW figures out how to move forward, Chuck Strawser of the Madison office
and Jack Hirt of the Milwaukee office will be tending to things. They are both
professionals, completely qualified to step in, and I hope that everyone will
trust that they will do their best. Bike Fed's work...advocacy, education, and
consulting...will go on as always.

I also urge anyone who wants to shape the future of the Bike Fed to make an
effort to get on to the Bicycle Federation Board. There is currently an open
seat. If you are a member and have any concerns...contact the board of
directors. Their emails are on the BFW website at
http://www.bfw.org/about/board.php. Edith Merila is board president and is
probably the primary person to address issues to, though I encourage you to cc
the entire board.

Moving forward...

For those who are interested in local Dane County advocacy, the Bicycle
Transportation Alliance of Dane County is going to fire up the coals again.
We'll be 1) preparing a city council election candidate survey on bike/ped
issues, 2) monitoring the Madison Platinum Committee's activites, 3) working on
funding issues for bicycling in Dane County. I encourage anyone who wants to
get more active in BTA's local advocacy efforts to contact me at this email
address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks to everyone who has sent me a kind email, called, or taken me out for
a beer. Madison has always felt like home to me since the first day I set foot
in town, and it reassures me that in the hard times, I still have the family of
this community. Your support means a great deal to me.

  Now...get back to rabble-rousing!
  -Dar
