Back in my days of employment, I rarely had the time to complain about these
things...but here's my gripe for the day (admittedly ped related, not
bike...though I was walking because I didn't feel particularly comfortable
biking today given conditions)

I took off for Indiana last week. I was gone for about 5 days. While I was gone
it snowed. When I returned, I had been issued a $109 fine for not shoveling my
sidewalk. While this sucks, especially since I don't currently have any
income...I was okay with it. I think that people SHOULD be fined for not
shoveling their walks (though, since the city plows the roads, it kinda seems
like they should do the same for sidewalks...but that's a whole other rant).

So, today, I walked just about maybe a half mile from my house to the Wheels
for Winners shop. Not only were the walks not shoveled...for 90% of the trip
THERE WERE NO SIDEWALKS. No biggie, you say? Well...my neighborhood is
residential, low speed/low traffic volume (though, apparently a priority for
shoveling the walks). The roads that I had to walk along to get to Wheels were
high volume...high speed. Doesn't it seem like that is where sidewalks are
needed the most? I had to walk in the road most of the time...and since the
road is a divided highway...I couldn't even walk against traffic most of the
way without having to cross a three foot deep snow drift. There are businesses
all along this stretch of Pennsylvania Ave...so it's not like people don't have
a need to walk there.

My socks are now wet and I feel lucky to be alive.

A more cynical person might say that there is no justice in this world.

200 Block W. Mifflin St. North sidewalk, in front of the City's other white
elephant, the Overlord Ce... er... Overture Center. All the snow is clear
EXCEPT for the bike parking. Seen on Sat. 27 Jan. I had contemplated bringing a
camera on my walk that day, and having seen that, wished I had.

How many words does it take to say nothing?

http://bfw.org/

There should be an interesting George Hesselberg article in
tomorrow's Wisc. State Journal about this.
