I brought a shovel to work today and shoveled out the bike rack that I use in front of the City-County building. A maintenance man brushing the walk with a bobcat helped out as well. That's one down and many more to go.

I was gone for about 5 days. While I was gone it snowed. When I returned, I had been issued a $109 fine for not shoveling my sidewalk. While this sucks, especially since I don't currently have any income...I was okay with it. I think that people SHOULD be fined for not shoveling their walks (though, since the city plows the roads, it kinda seems like they should do the same for sidewalks...but that's a whole other rant). So, today, I walked just about maybe a half mile from my house to the Wheels for Winners shop. Not only were the walks not shoveled...for 90% of the trip THERE WERE NO SIDEWALKS. No biggie, you say? Well...my neighborhood is residential, low speed/low traffic volume (though, apparently a priority for shoveling the walks). The roads that I had to walk along to get to Wheels were high volume...high speed. Doesn't it seem like that is where sidewalks are needed the most? I had to walk in the road most of the time...and since the road is a divided highway...I couldn't even walk against traffic most of the way without having to cross a three foot deep snow drift. There are businesses all along this stretch of Pennsylvania Ave...so it's not like people don't have a need to walk there. My socks are now wet and I feel lucky to be alive. A more cynical person might say that there is no justice in this world. -Dar From: "Paul T. I had contemplated bringing a camera on my walk that day, and having seen that, wished I had. > From: > > If anyone's riding around with a digital camera or one of those camera phones, and wants to take a picture of where Madison is letting bicyclists down, go to the bottom level of Monona Terrace, east of the monstrosity itself, near where the elevator empties. There is a bike rack actually right on the other side of a wall from the Law Park bike path. The snow from the massive sea of concrete down there is pushed up against the bike rack. Another pile of snow is right near the east exit of the sidewalk to the path. At least this time you can get through, but having a picture of it would be nice to have on file. > > tim --------------- Paul T. O'Leary Desktop Insurgent Madison, WI USA From: "Michael D.
