The beeper noise is probably irrelevant, too. The Commonwealth resident probably would have called even if the beeper had been turned off. That individual's gripe may have more to do with the fact that a bike path was built near his house against his wishes. What he/she doesn't seem to realize is that the bike path helps encourage people in the community not to drive so much, thus preserving our air quality and other natural resources from the ill-effects of excessive motor vehicle driving. He/she should learn to be more tolerant of the greater needs of the community.
Mike Neuman "Human society has now reached a point in population growth and technological skill at which it can destroy the viability of the environment .... To the extraterrestrial observer, man might appear as unself-conscious as a fish in relation to his ecological situation. This ecological innocence, harmless in fish, is dangerous in men. Rambunctious adolescent naivete' and a powerful, science-based technology are poorly matched companions...." If that doesn't work, the operator can always sound the horn. So a beeper isn't necessary. But I don't think the path's history as a railroad line is really relevant. The houses were there when the railroad was active, but most of the people in the houses weren't. There have been no trains along the route for at least ten years, and for a long time before that trains were very rare. And when trains ran along those tracks, the neighborhood did complain about the noise; train noise was an issue in at least one County Board election. >> >> From: Kendall, Jill >> Sent: Thursday, February 01, 2007 8:07 AM >> To: Nelson, Larry >> Cc: Cryan, Kathy >> Subject: W Bikepath Snow Removal Complaint >> >> >> 2/1/07 @ 6:15 am received a call from ___________, XXXX Commonwealth, >> XXX-XXXX regarding having been woken up for the 3rd time this week >> around 5:45 am by the "tractor w/ beeper" cleaning the W bikepath.
