Here's an opportunity for bicyclists and others to testify about the preference given to car drivers in Madison at the expense of mass transit users and other people who don't own or use cars.
Mike Neuman -------------------------------- King Streets Bus Stops Removed with Public Notice by Mike N. 12 Feb 2007 With no public notice last fall, Madison Metro Bus Transit decided to eliminate bus stops on both sides of King Street near the Majestic Theater, adding more auto parking capacity along King Street. Members of the Madison Area Bus Advocates (MABA) voiced concern over the action at a 9 January 2007 Transit and Parking Commission meeting. Summary: The issue is on the agenda for the City of Madison's Transit and Parking Commission meeting tomorrow night, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007 at 5:00 PM in Rm. 260 of the Madison Municipal Building. MABA is urging Metro Bus users and others concerned about too much car driving in Madison to attend the meeting and testify against the continued elimination of bus stops on King Street. Text: In a memorandum to Transit and Parking Commission Members dated January 22, 2007, Metro Planning & Scheduling Manager Ms. Sharon Persich confirmed that staff decided in September 2006 to remove westbound stop 1368. She added that eastbound stop 1395 (located across the street) was also eliminated because: "it is easier for passengers to understand service when east and westbound stops are located in the same general location". Members of the Madison Area Bus Advocates (MABA) voiced concern over the action at a 9 January 2007 Transit and Parking Commission meeting. In testifying to the commission, MABA president Susan DeVos emphatically said: "the city should be increasing the number of bus stops, not decreasing it"; and that "Metro would benefit from consulting bus riders before making decision such as this". In a message posted to the MABA's group list serv the past weekend, MABA president Susan DeVos said the issue of the King St. Stop is on the agenda for the next Transit and Parking Commission meeting on Tuesday Feb. 13 and urged others to join her in testifying. "Metro is not asking for citizen input and in fact is burying a memo about what it is doing at the end of a 12-page recommendation on transit planning", she said. The meeting starts at 5:00 PM in Rm. 260 of the Madison Municipal Building. In order to testify, one has to come before the discussion on the item begins and fill out an identification form.
