Hello all, I think Robbie and I deserve some time off today to enjoy the great weather and go for a therapuetic ride....when we finally have down time later this week, it doesn't sound the weather will be near as nice to enjoy. I know none of us, including Robbie and me, can remember all that comes across our plates when you're involved. We addressed the rodeo with issue's back in late 03, early 04, in Rna meets and a few chats with Robbie...so it's been awhile. I can understand why she doesn't remember. I ended up connecting with Alison Dwyer at the Bike Fed and she helped get me some more info on bike rodeos for kids. I guess Robbie's post points out somewhat the difference in perceptions that we have on when to take action. Since Robbie has that expertise, why hasn't she used it to help the two elementary schools in her district, and all of the kids here in our neighborhood? Also, why wait for a study that is delayed to tell you what you already know? Everyone wants more bike parking? "Overanalysis Paralysis" is a common trait of beaurocracy-and has often been used as a phrase to describe Madison policy deliberations-I know the bike advocates are as frustrated with the slowness as anyone, but in a great cycling city like Madison, sometimes the right thing to do is the right thing to do, and there's no need to wait for more studies. Time passing is lost opportunity. The Nike mantra "Just Do It" makes sense with these two issues. I meant it when I said to Robbie back in November when we talked about the campaign that after this election is over, I want to be able to still work with her on things that we share as important. I look forward to getting to action stage with both of these, win or lose, we should be able to make these good potential policies happen. Regards, Troy

As anyone who has worked with the city knows, it's hard to change the dominant culture. To clarify: 1. No one ever informed me of the Bike Rodeo at Franklin/Randall. Strange, since as far as I know, I am the only nationally certified bicycle safety instructor in mu neighborhood, and I am also certified by WisDOT to teach others how to conduct bike rodeos. Or possibly, if this was one put on my Steve Meiers, other colleagues of mine assisted. 2. Sonya and I have been trying to get the downtown bike parking situation improved. I even had a resolution drafted to be introduced at Council to do a study of bicycle parking needs in downtown and requesting that solutions be drafted. The Mayor's office asked me to wait, because they wanted downtown bike parking, along with many other bicycle issues, to be addressed as part of the Platinum Bicycle Committee. It would help considerably if the merchants and other business interests in downtown continued to push for the need for bicycle parking as hard as they push for an expensive downtown car parking ramp. As I've always said, grassroots advocacy will always be more effective than one elected official alone. -- Robbie Webber Bicycle Friendly Communities Coordinator Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin www.bfw.org 608-251-4456 (office) 608-233-1390 (home) _______________________________________________ Bikies mailing list [email protected] http://www.danenet.org/mailman/listinfo/bikies
