Here's a little something that is sure to spark conversation: http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/column/smith/index.php?ntid=128811 The choice section for me was: --- Last time I wrote about the need for improvements on Verona Road at the Beltline, one of Madison's major interchanges, I got this reply from West Side Ald. Robbie Webber, who is a much better person than me because she bikes to work: "Just as parents sometimes have to tell their kids that their holiday gift wish isn't in the family budget, we have to tell drivers the same thing. Better check the condition and size of the roads before you decide to live, work, or shop away from transit, walking and biking options, because they may stay exactly as they are now: narrow, bumpy, and increasingly congested." In other words, those who fail to live the Progressive Dane lifestyle deserve to sit in traffic. Next time, I'll remember to get permission before I marry someone with a job in another part of the county, or give birth to children who need to go to the orthodontist in Monona or play soccer in Middleton. --- Robbie's comments were very professional, and right-on in terms of what I understand about the transportation outlook for our area. Lampert Smith goes into histrionics. I am sorry that traffic congestion is such a problem for her. Perhaps she could write about the whole cultural process that led her to being stuck on that morning instead of the blaming the messenger who tells her it might not get any better.
