This recently came off of the sustaindane list.

This is the 3d list I've seen with people taking serious issue with Lampert-Smith's very selfish, very auto-centric (is that redundant or what?!) viewpoint.

3. Forecasting versus Backcasting

Backcasting – "living into" a desired future - is one of the most
powerful concepts in The Natural Step framework. Fortunately,
Madison has leaders who take this principle to heart on their way to
and from work: they walk, bike, and use public transit.

But there are powerful forces in Dane County who remain fixated
on "forecasting" – people who believe that our future is more or less
pre-ordained by extrapolation from past trends, however unsustainable
or absurd. For a perfect example of this mindset, please read Susan
Lampert-Smith's column "Leaders ought to drive a car to work" in the
April 11 2007 Wisconsin State Journal.

Although it is not surprising that Lampert-Smith bristles at Madison
Alder Robbie Webber's advice to "think before buying" the autocentric
lifestyle, the fact that Lampert-Smith goes on to castigate Madison
leaders for not driving enough is astonishing! Yet in all likelihood
her perspectives on highway expansion reflect the majority outlook in
Dane County.

So I pose this question to all Sustain Dane members: "What can WE do
to help the Susan Lampert-Smiths in our midst to "get it" about
sustainability – and to understand that highway expansions without
end are a prescription for a devastated, gridlocked planet?

I also encourage everyone to send letters to the editor regarding
Lampert-Smith's column – and the ecologically bankrupt viewpoint it
represents.
