Hans is really on a tear now! (See below)

For those of you who don't know Hans Noeldner, he lives in Oregon, WI, apparently sans deathmobile. We've got it easy here in MSN living w/o the DM; to try it out in Oregon....I can hardly imagine. But he routinely shows up to meetings in Madison (like last year's Nolen Conference) by bike and has all sorts of great, elegantly simple--and just plain right--solutions to environmental problems. It usually involves using less, which instantaneously puts him on the way-out-there margins in the eyes of legit/paid enviros. He also was an alder in Oregon until this past election. It was sad to see someone with his vision and impatience to actually *do* something about global warming (i.e., something substantive, beyond the Rube Goldberg-esque groovey-green gizmos & messianic miracle fuels that keep us on the consumption treadmill) get voted out of office.

We wouldn't want to actually do the simplest thing to avert catastrophe--use less--now would we?

Earth Day 2007
--------------
How do we mitigate climate change? Stop wars for oil? Halt
explosive sprawl? Realistically, Americans are not (yet?) ready for
the necessary metamorphosis from a growth-oriented economy into a
truly sustainable society. Political leaders remain unwilling to
propose fundamental lifestyle changes or confront entrenched sectors
of the economy. In a nation where self-fulfillment and the pursuit
of material wealth are considered virtues, preaching self-restraint
and criticizing others for conspicuous consumption are unforgivable
sins. True believers find it more comfortable to congregate at Earth
Day celebrations and talk about rain gardens, fair trade coffee, and
converting lawn tractors to run on biodiesel. Sustainability
proponents acknowledge that these are "baby steps" relative to planet-
wide dilemmas which confront Mankind…

Earth Day 2027
--------------
New Delhi, India
Today the Bangladeshi government-in-exile admitted that rising ocean
levels make it impossible to re-inhabit most of their nation because
it is now either permanently underwater or severely flooded during
annual "hyper-monsoons". It is expected that 165 million survivors
out of a former population of 253 million will have to be resettled.
Indian leader Mahatma Jahwari called on First World nations to open
their borders and "…take responsibility for forced migrations that
are almost entirely a consequence of climate changes caused by First
World emissions". US President Jenna H.W. Bush countered that her
top priority must be to "…grow our economy out of the severe
depression following the unexpected peak in world oil production in
2014". Bush IV also noted that resettlement land is scarce: "Even
with CAFÉ standards rising to 55 mpg, every acre…must be used for
production of the biofuels Americans need to drive to work, school,
and the shopping mall."

Earth Day 2057
--------------
New Hollywood, Idaho
This afternoon media mogul Steven Spielberg II unveiled his eagerly
anticipated multi-sensory production "Carbon Holocaust", a
painstakingly accurate documentary which illustrates the disastrous
consequences of climate change during the past 60 years. Human-
induced global warming is now blamed for 4.3 billion refugees and
over 2.9 billion deaths. Spielberg commented, "…it (global warming)
makes the Nazi's systematic extermination of Jews and other 'non-
desirables' look like a Sunday School picnic. People living near
crematoria during WWII excused themselves by saying they didn't know
what was going on – although the wind DID smell awful sometimes.
Fifty years ago, most thinking Americans knew what had to be done.
They KNEW! But it seemed too drastic, too draconian. So they
limited themselves to `baby steps', knowing damn well that baby steps
were not enough. There is no forgiving them for what happened. We
must say, `Never again!'"
