Doug,
Are you telling me Homer Simpson fell asleep at the radar?
DOH!....NUTS!....mmmm donuts.....
While the consensus among the diploma wavers is that the blobs were
not clouds (I admit wrongness on that count), this was my main point:
...the low-level inversion, which forms on clear nights, is stronger
in some places than others.
Exactly. That is, to paraphrase the statement above, the weather
changing effect was stronger in paved over areas than non-paved over
areas.
Not so fast. If pavement were the cause, the radar images would
correlate better to size of the metro area, Chicago is massive compared
to anything in northern Michigan (LP) but the images indicate the
reverse. Gaylord Mich is not very urban, however the proximity to the
great lakes would tend to enhance the inversion. Also look at the area
west of the Appalachians - more radar intensity but generally smaller
metro areas. Atlanta is another prime example - should be HUGE.
There was actually some of that going on, but, every blob could be
correlated with a major paved-over area--despite the fact that
apparently there are plenty of radar sites in rural areas (according
to the diploma wavers--I don't know that for sure, I'll admit up
front). If there were indeed rural radar sites, they weren't rendering
the same growing blobs.
The NWS site lists the radar sites they use in the mosaic, about 3-4 per
state, and they seem to correlate very well to the blobs, much better I
think than size of the metro area.
This doesn't mean that there isn't an urban heat island effect, it just
means this radar imagery isn't necessarily evidence for it. So no more
cherry picking data to use as evidence - leave that to the Bushies. Not
to worry though there is still plenty of compelling evidence out there
for man's effect on the climate.
Here is the website for the list of radar sites, see "Radars by State".
Also note the "Doppler University" - maybe you could be a diploma waver too!
