Bicycling is no more a lone activity than is driving your car. As a matter of fact, bicyclists can interact much better with others on the road/street/sidewalk because they are not enclosed in a metal box.

Driving a car is one of the most dangerous activities in which most Americans engage every day, and yet, almost no one hesitates to drive or be a passenger in a car. Even in a car, we could be killed at any moment or run off the road by an ass who intentionally or unintentionally does something malicious or stupid.

The more bicyclists there are on the road, the less we will feel alone. Ditto with pedestrians. You are only alone if no one else is on the road, and in that case, you really only need to worry about riding/driving off the road yourself.
