Dear Michael,

In this day of association as motives in "crimes" we have both targets
and groups given special concern as perpetrators. If what happened to
Dar happened in a Gay Pride parade, one would be certain of an
association. Or if the person were darkish, with whiskers sitting aside
a women with her head covered, we would associate equally. A crime is a
crime and we all do know about assaults. But if anybody for a moment
thinks that those riding along on bicycles follows the socio-economic
mix in proportions as Dar contends, must be smoking something. And
maybe there is no rhyme or reason for general assaults against
bicyclists--which I have seen for forty-five years as I remembered an
incident with farm boys and their farm truck to me. It is strange how
easy it is to squawk about motorists and their hangups and suggest
Napoleon complexes and macho this and that--but why not consider
attributing some psychologically possible motive to assaults against
bicyclists. And to the expert on assault, does the car or truck have to
hit some part of a bicycle to make it an assault?
