The BFW bylaws are silent on how candidates are nominated for the board
election. It just says that only members may vote (which has, in the past,
been interpreted as members whose dues are paid in full), the membership must
receive ballots 30 days before the results are finalized, and that directors
are elected by a plurality of the votes.

There is a policy that was approved by the BFW board about 4 years ago stating
that anyone can be on the ballot...but that the sitting board can also endorse
a slate of candidates. Write in candidates are also allowed. Note that Eric
Schramm was elected to the board as a write in candidate with 7 votes...but
only because the board neglected to run a full slate during that election.
Since that election, there has always been the same number of people on the
ballot as number of vacancies. Under the policy that I've just outlined, there
could, in theory, be more candidates running than open positions...allowing for
a competitive election. In the past a bio has been included for all
candidates...anyone running who is not on the endorsed slate should request
that their bio be included.

I just want to clarify that the current board is not "opening up the election"
to anyone...they are merely following the policy that was instituted, at my
request, four years ago. If they were to NOT allow non-endorsed
candidates...THEN they would be changing the standing policy.
