Unfortunately, they're only interested in driving solo to Madison to work everyday, rather than taking transit. That's what the Sun Prairie council vote shows more than anything. It's the best place in the country to live (http://finance.yahoo.com/real-estate/article/103225/Best-Places-to-Live. ..even though many of the amenities mentioned in the article are actually Madison's). This on the heels of Sun Prairie voting not to support the new RTA (http://www.thewheelerreport.com/releases/July07/july11/0711bruhnrta.pdf) . Mike's concerns about an RTA paying for road maintenance duly noted...it is hard not to think that commuters from Sun Prairie aren't a major reason why Dane County might need an RTA in the first place. Apparently, everyone wants to benefit from being near Madison and driving into Madison to work and clogging up the Isthmus with cars...but no one wants to pay for the services in Madison that they use on a daily basis. Incidentally, here is the US Census Journey to Work data for 2000 for Sun Prairie for workers age 16+ (yes...I am a wonky geek who used to be a regional rep for the Census Bureau): Total:11,068 Worked in place of residence 3,347 (ie, in Sun Prairie) Worked outside place of residence 7,721 (ie, not in Sun Prairie) Mode: Car, truck, or van:10,540 Drove alone 9,620 Carpooled 920 Public transportation: 29 Bus or trolley bus 13 Taxicab 16 Motorcycle 11 Bicycle 14 Walked 159 Other means 19 Worked at home 296 Commute time: Less than 5 minutes 496 5 to 9 minutes 1,929 10 to 14 minutes 1,673 15 to 19 minutes 1,452 20 to 24 minutes 1,552 25 to 29 minutes 903 30 to 34 minutes 1,490 35 to 39 minutes 305 40 to 44 minutes 201 45 to 59 minutes 415 60 to 89 minutes 180 90 or more minutes 176 _______________________________________________ Bikies mailing list [email protected] http://www.danenet.org/mailman/listinfo/bikies
