Dear Group, As we all know, "THE PEOPLE" voted with their wallets for Model T cars--and have voted similarly ever since our families took to the autos between 1910 and 1920. And we know that safe driving is demanding even when ours is the only vehicle to think about. But in complex driving we rely on instincts, experience, habits, and a good physical condition. Just what percent of drivers have abilities up to the demands of the task?-------not many. Can we have driving exams for these skills----certainly more rigorous exams than we have now. But once again---this time it is the POLITICAL voter. -----"THE PEOPLE" have handicapped and elderly relatives who, if denied driving licenses would then become dependents on the STATE or their relatives-----both who want to avoid such at all costs. So, we have elderly drivers who cannot rotate their necks with licenses. We have elderly drivers who have had strokes and hear attacks, dizzy spells and blackouts--with diver's licenses. And we have those with "Down's Syndrome" and unable to work and live on their own, subject to seizures--with driver's licenses. (Some year ago such a person had a seizure and killed an entire family on #41 near Milwaukee--and she was just fine.) I could go on about all the compromised drivers under the best of circumstances---all with driver's licenses. That coupled with the fact that cars with rack and pinion modern steering require a much higher degree of concentration that was the case thirty or forty years ago. In 1910 the railroads began their great decline and the PEOPLE voted for automobiles. How can we ever return to public transport except in urban areas. Even the less costly buses are now gone from rural America.
There is little chance of passing physical and mental requirements for driving automobiles. And except for people lucky enough to work for gigantic employers like universities---who lives anywhere near their places of work?
