Eric wondered about how bicyclists in higher crime communities deal with
personal safety.
I know bicyclists from all over the country. I think that they all deal with
personal safety in pretty much the same way...by learning how to ride in a
vehicular style and by paying vigilant attention to their surroundings. I
biked in South Bend, Indiana for two years and this was the approach that I
took there...in an area where motorists did not share the road well and crime
was much higher than in Madison.
Unfortunately, neither of those things can stop someone from driving up next to
you and pushing you over.
But I'll see if I can get a bite from the national list-serv on this issue.
