and the dollar amount of that 40% is a whole lot more than all the money
that goes to transit and other social transportation options,
"subsidized" (a word that should not be used; we don't talk about
subsidized police protection or subsidized fire protection or subsidized
garbage pickup). That said, 1K "Friends" should be severely criticized
for their efforts to end the automatic indexing of the gas tax, which
did a whole lot more damage to all of our causes than all the good they
do by removing money from the transportation budget. The higher gas tax
is paid only by people buying gas. The highwaymen always get their
money anyway, so guess who gets the shaft in the transportation arena?
Nice one, 1K and dim-bulb Spencer Black!

Another reason to go to the 1k Friends of Wisconsin website (in
addition to info on the RTA that Matt Logan brought up) is they have
a great new report on transportation funding that counters the claim
anti-transit folks like to make that roads and highways "pay for
themselves" through gas tax and registration fees while transit is
"subsidized."

Turns out 40% of road and highway costs are covered by property
taxes.
