I typically relax and read the submissions with an open mind trying to
understand what is happening to cyclists in and around Madison, and the state.
I am a recent transplant from SC through NH and MA. I came here because of what
I had read, and heard about cycling in this State, through Bicycling magazine
and attending advocate training sessions with the Thunderhead Alliance. I have
not been disappointed to date!
I wanted to get more involved with the advocacy efforts and found the BFW and
Bikies. These two organizations have given me a renewed interest in issues
which affect me and my fellow cyclists.
I am proud to be one of the "chosen ones" who applied for, and earned a
recommendation from, the BFW Nominating Committee to sit on the BFW Board of
Directors based on my experience and desire to serve all cyclists, no matter
what they ride. I appreciated their efforts to understand me, and why I wanted
to be involved.
I did write a bio which was a true reflection of what I accomplished in New
Hampshire for bicyclists wanting to improve their space on the roads, and why I
wanted to do the same here in Wisconsin.
I was not involved in the past elections, but it sounds like the BFW is trying
to continually improve their organization by adding structure to their election
process.
I can only ask the Bikies and BFW memberships to consider why things change,
and to consider my election efforts to be a true desire of MINE to help other
cyclists in this State.
When you receive your BFW ballot, I am asking that you support me for that open
position on the Board.

Police say the 28-year-old driver of the car stopped to
check on the bicyclist, who had fallen to the pavement around 10:45 p.m. The
bicyclist got up, fired three shots and hit the driver once in the shoulder.
The motorist drove to the house of a friend, who then took
him to a hospital. He was treated and released.
Police said they were looking for the bicyclist on Saturday.

Not exactly the high-profile we could hope for, though.

Subject: [Bikies] BFW Board Elections

I am loathe to weigh in...but here it goes:
About five years ago, the BFW had no written policy on ballots for board
election. The board had their annual election and there was an empty seat and
they failed to run a candidate. As such...Eric Schramm was elected as a write
in candidate with 7 votes (a plurality). In that same year Tim Wong got 4
write in votes and two other people each got one write in vote.
Though Eric was welcomed to the board...there was a scramble to assure that
this kind of thing would never happen again. So the board began nominating
candidates.
Then...a few years later, John Rider expressed interest in being on the board.
He was convinced not to run...basically to stand down. This had been the case
with a handful of other candidates over that year and the few years after the
Schramm thing and up to present...people were talked out of running for the
board so that the board's preferred candidates
would be elected unopposed. Bill Hauda was nominated by the board and won
election without opposition.
After that, it was clear that a policy needed to be put in place. The policy
was that anyone who wanted to be on the ballot would be included on the
ballot...with a bio. The board would have an endorsed slate...but others could
be on the ballot "unendorsed". There could also be write in candidates.
That was the written BFW policy until January 15, 2007.
In any regular year...candidates win the election with about 70-200 votes. So
only about 200 people vote in the election.
Anyone who does not live in Dane County has no idea what is going on inside
BFW...so I firmly believe that the election could be controlled by a Dane
County write in campaign. There are about 700-1000 BFW members in Dane
County...about 1/3 to 1/2 of the membership (don't know current numbers, this
was the case as of last year).
If people
want Pam Barrett...or anyone else...elected as a write in candidate...it is
doable...but it won't be easy.

Thunderhead Alliance to Strengthen and Broadcast Growing Local Voices
for Better Biking and Walking to National Leaders
The Board of Directors of the Thunderhead Alliance, the national
coalition of state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy
organizations, announces that it is in search of an executive director
to lead this growing and dynamic organization. Since 1997, the
Thunderhead Alliance has worked to unite local advocates to break down
the barriers to safe bicycling and walking. The organization started as
a loose federation of the leaders of 25 bicycle and pedestrian advocacy
groups across the U.S. and has grown to become a go-to resource for
people looking to promote and improve walking and bicycling in their
community.
The Board of Directors is moving the organization in a new
direction
that will boost its stature, and the stature of its member-advocates,
and importance of biking and walking at the national level, while
maintaining Thunderhead's role as a resource for advocates. Now, with
local advocacy organizations established throughout the U.S. and
Canada,
the Thunderhead Alliance will take its collective strength to the next
level and broadcast the widespread support for non-motorized transport
to national leaders, funders and decision makers. It will work with
members and national partners to build strong coalitions that will
fight
for increased funding and stronger policies to increase walking and
bicycling. Thunderhead will strive to expand its funding base and grow
its networks and their connections. As the debate over reauthorization
of the federal transportation bill has already begun, this
effort is
more important than ever. Thunderhead will continue to unite local
advocates and conduct capacity building among nascent organizations and
those who want to know how to get started, for this is the foundation
for translating local interest into policy change at the local and
national levels.
The Alliance Board is seeking an executive director to lead the
organization who possesses a strong commitment to Thunderhead's mission
and goals, will work with staff to empower local advocates, build
coalitions and partnerships, employ diverse advocacy approaches and
techniques, increase federal funding for biking and walking and raise
significant funds to achieve these goals. The new director will work
with the board and Thunderhead staff to carryout a transition plan to
ensure strong continuity in the organization and amongst our members,
funders and partners.
Since 2002, Sue Knaup has served as the executive director
of the
Thunderhead Alliance and has worked long and hard to grow the bicycling
and walking movement on the local level in U.S. and Canada. The Board
of
Directors expresses its deep appreciation to Sue for her hard work,
dedication and commitment in fulfilling the goals of the organization,
for developing it into a strong, independent voice for local advocacy
groups in North America and for fostering the work we all believe in.
During her tenure, the organization expanded staff, funding sources and
programs and helped form new local bike and pedestrian advocacy
organizations around the country. We know so many members treasure Sue,
and the board hopes that she will continue to play an important role in
advancing the cause of
bicycling and walking.
Please check the Thunderhead Alliance website for application
information, www.thunderheadalliance.org). If you have any questions
