According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, there were
629, 727 and 784 "pedalcyclists" (bicyclists and riders of two-wheel
non-motorized vehicles, tricycles, and unicycles powered solely by
pedals) in 2003, 2004 and 2005, respectively. By my calculations, that's
a 25% increase in the number of crashes. It appears these types of
crashes are happening more frequently.

It's also noteable that the first automobile crash in the United States
occurred in New York City in 1896, when a motor vehicle collided with a
pedalcycle rider.

A quick Google search yields an answer:
http://www.bicyclinginfo.org/bc/perspective.cfm

According to this source, the answer is no. Bicyclist fatalities are
down 28 percent from 1990 to 2003.

I really do not want to be the one posting this, but yesterday afternoon
there was a fatal hit and run involving three bicyclists in Washington
County. One bicyclist, age 13, was dead at the scene and the other two,
both 12, were hospitalized. The driver was arrested later that night.

Is it me or do these types of crashes seem to be happening more
frequently?
