Dear Bikies,
Aaron Wieler, author of the Community Bike Cart Design zine [
http://bikecart.pedalpeople.com/], will be coming to Madison, Oct. 14th. to
teach a hands-on class on brazing and building bike carts.

"I became interested in bike carts after I saw two Bikes at Work trailers
being used for trash and recycling pickup in Northampton, Massachusetts, by
Pedal People. They are great trailers, but cost $400. This cart costs $30 in
parts, is fun and educational, and is an opportunity to build community
through both the fabrication and use of the carts."

He will be in town all weekend giving a speech on saturday in coordination
with mini Zine Fest going on and the workshop. The workshop itself though,
is looking for sponsors, participants, and supplies to give it the push it
needs. Being worked on currently by Freewheel Bike Workshop [
free.mildmedia.net/] volunteers, we still need more help. Although
Freewheel can provide some of supplies, if anyone person(s) or businesses
would like to donate or co-sponsor the event it would be super helpful. We
are also not experts on welding. Our current goal is to build at least one
cart, and probably a second. If help can be found, it would very much
appreciated!! The most important things we need to secure right now are:

   - A location near downtown to weld. We are currently looking into
co-ops as a possibility. But someone's garage is just as good! ;)
   - A welder and supplies. "We'll actually need an oxy-acetylene torch
for brazing the trailers for the workshop-- we can also talk about arc
welding, but for the context of a buch of people learning these skills in an
afternoon, brazing is a good approach. so that's a tank of oxygen, a tank of
acetylene, regulators and hoses for each, a torch body, and a welding
tip---i'm forgetting numbers, but a small tip is good--as small as possible.
00 or 0 would be best, anything less than #3. striker, gloves, and #5 shade
goggles for 4 people at least. flux and brazing rod. We'll end up using
about $15 worth of gas" ~Aaron
   - 20 inch wheels. at least 4. Freewheel has been a little short on
20 inchers. Those are really popular with the kiddies!
   - A person skilled in welding to do a possible follow-up with
interested participants. One of the goals of some of current interested
folks is building carts to take on the PNC2RNC bike ride [
http://lothwiki.org/index.php/PNC2RNC] next august. The goal would be
to build several over the next 8 months to donate to local organizations in
the Twin Cities. And of course to build some for locals. And to extend
welding into such projects as building recombinant bicycles and art bikes
   for interested folks.

This should be an exciting activity as well as a good time for people
searching for these skills and resources to unite. If you can contribute
anything to it's success, whether it be knowledge, a welder (for the
demonstration), or some leads, all is appreciated. And if you interested
in coming, please email me! Thank you much.
