David:
I wouldn't say that this campaign is "beginning discussions." BFW has had an
active motorist education campaign going ever since the most recent round of
things getting ugly in Western Dane County...and on through the murder of
Jessica Bullen and subsequent acquittal of her killer...over two years.

In fact, there are TWO tv psas are already filmed and in the can and ready to
roll if someone would pay for the airtime. I believe paying for that air time
is a recommendation of the Platinum Committee...a body that has dollars to
devote to just such a project (that recommendation is in the current draft
document that is waiting for public input). The spots are well produced and
were the product of a large coalition of input including law enforcement. Safe
Community Coalition is the contact...they are just waiting for the money.

The spots address 3 foot passing and turning movement issues...and they are
funny.

I hope that those psas, which were worked on for over a year, will not be lost
to the history books.

"All
of these utilized an extensive PR campaign via the medium of - you
guessed it - television ads. The Bicycle Federation is beginning
discussions to look into this very thing - a campaign of PSAs designed to
highlight the safety concerns of cyclists. The three-foot passing law, the
left turning car hazard and the "blasting my horn whilst driving 6
inches from your dropouts" are topics that came up in the initial
discussions. I'm sure that this discussion group will be a source of many more
 suggestions. "
