Oh, that's a pile of ****, it's a myth.  (Real) Beer is an important
part of a healthy lifestyle.

Consider Rich Becker, brewmaster at JTWhitney's.  I confess I may have
had some very tiny role in getting him turned on to bicycling, but he's
gone way beyond that, now almost 50 and completed the Ironman...and also
has been known regularly to bring home a growler from work to enjoy in
the evening.

I could see doing the bicycling or the running part (perhaps even the
open water distance swim part, although I have not actually tried that
part personally) individually, but to do all three in the same day is
beyond me.  So the beer must be helping Rich accomplish all that added
physical activity.  Could he have done that as well without the beer
fuelling?  ;-)  Perhaps, but it certainly hasn't hurt him.
