Parking for bicycles is going to be temporarily removed Friday Morning
along State Street:

I am disappointed in the city's message so far on this subject.
Bicyclists are still going to park in the area, and it would be very
helpful for the city to make sure the word gets out in the media about
where to find alternate parking during Freakfest. Also the MPD property
room guy is giving the impression that it will be impossible to recover
your bike if it is removed from State Street on Friday morning - this is
contrary to state law which requires the police to make a reasonable
effort to return property.

Madison is supposed to be a bike friendly City and to me that means in
situations like this, bicyclists are given as much information as
possible to help then deal with the situation. So far, it appears that
the city is simply treating bicyclists like cattle that have strayed
into the wrong field. The Pre-freakfest bicycle parking removal has
been going on for a number of years, so I am really surprised at how
poorly this seems to have been handled so far.

Here is what I expect. I hope these are already on the list and in
progress:

* Identify and prepare alternate bicycle parking locations.
* Affix warning notices to bicycles parked on state street 48 hours in
advance of the removal (they should be there now!)
* Make sure to include alternate bike parking information on the warning
notices affixed to bicycles on state street.
* Make sure to include bicycle recovery information on the warning
notices affixed to bicycles on state street.
* Provide some temporary signage to inform bicyclists trying to park on
state street about the location of the alternate parking.
* Put out a city press release on bike parking during freakfest which
includes the information about alternate bicycle parking and bicycle
recovery. Make sure to communicate this to local news media.
* Coordinate with MPD on the city press release.
