I think the reason we have so much paving over is because
1)smooth roads are good for dairy transport, and paving lasts longer than
well-packed dirt, year round
2) people want to make money, encourage transportation to businesses (tourism,
for example)
3) people don't want to live in downtown areas for various (some made-up, some
not) stereotypes (crime, noise, lack of parking, pedestrian safety, and lack of
greenspace are examples) and go to sprawly suburbs
4) overall, people are lazy and drive too much, thereby create the "need" for
things like the Stoughton Rd. "improvement"
I doubt any of these factors would change, or the expression of these factors
would change much, given different past political histories or control. But
maybe I'm just pessimistic that money can corrupt anyone regardless of
political orientation. Except the greens (?)

p.s. random beef--why does it have to be smart _growth_? why can't it be smart
_stabilization_?
