Biking on the Lakeshore Path at night convinced me of two things: 1. A really bright light is needed on that path. (A cheap flashlight from Walgreen's would work in an emergency on most Madison streets, so cost shouldn't be an issue for the vast majority of bikers.) Besides pedestrians, I'm afraid of hitting a stray branch, animal, or pothole.
2. Reflective stuff really works. Seeing the reflective places on people's shoes, backpacks, bags, jackets, etc. made me realize that a few spots of reflective stuff is a good investment. BUT only when the lights of another vehicle hit it at the right angle - directly behind you! It doesn't do squat for being seen from the side. -- Please note that my personal email has changed.
