"Freezing for Safety" on Friday features

UW cyclists pedaling in the cold

MADISON - About two dozen members of the UW Cycling Club will brave the
chilly temperatures all day Friday, February 8, to raise money for
disadvantaged local children who otherwise could not afford to purchase
bicycle helmets.

On the UW Library Mall, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. this Friday, the UW
Cycling Club members will ride stationary bicycles in shifts, with
approximately six to 12 cyclists riding at any given time.

An annual event since 2001, "Freezing for Safety" raises between $1,000
and $2,000 each year from passers-by who are encouraged to deposit loose
change or bills into a container. Every dollar collected goes to the
Safe Kids Coalition of Madison, which uses the funds to purchase bicycle
helmets for underprivileged children throughout Dane County. Bicycle
helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent and will make a
difference in the safety and well-being of disadvantaged children in our
community.

American Family Children's Hospital is the lead agency for the Safe Kids
Coalition of Madison. More information is available at:
