A big thank you to everyone on the bikies list who stopped by to help on
Saturday (or last week/weekend) with the Wheels for Winners move. Thanks too
to those who have sent checks or referred us to other resources. We are 90%
done with the move, and mainly have to still get extra electrical outlets
installed, the phone setup, and do clean up at the old shop.
We've got about 70 un-repaired department-store-style bikes (mostly 24 and 26
inch wheels) that we need to unload. Eventually we'll probably build more
storage capacity into the new shop location, but it won't happen in the next
week. We have to be out of the old shop by Friday and there is no room at the
new shop at the moment for these last bikes. These are not bikes that most
bikies would want, but if you know of worthy causes that could use them, let us
know (Red Bikes and St. Vinny's are NOT options as those are more likely than
not where the bikes came from in the first place, and Freewheel, Working Bikes
of Chicago, and the Milwaukee Bike Collective have already been emailed about
it). If we can't find a bulk recipient in the next few days, we'll likely
announce a few hours of free bike giveaway later this week. Stay tuned.
A crisis like the one at Wheels for Winners with the flood, subsequent conflict
with our landlord, and need to move quickly could have easily ended our
organization. With less than a $12,000 per year budget, Wheels relies solely on
the labor of volunteers. The last two months have been an incredible strain on
our seven member working board and has required us and our stable of other
volunteers to work long hours doing all kinds of things many of us have never
had to do before. Instead of destroying the organization though, I think the
move will strengthen Wheels. We have a higher profile location now, and many
of us, though weary, are more dedicated than ever before to assuring that
Wheels stays a strong member of the community for many years to come.
Thanks for coming together in our time of need...we could not have done it
without your help.
