I emailed my sister who is a 1984 grad of Ripon College and she responded that she is "amused because Ripon isn't big enough for students to need bikes to get around campus. In fact, it's such a small town, that the reason students brought cars was to leave town in search of civilization: Oshkosh, Madison, etc. Maybe things have changed and kids are driving the 6 blocks to The Piggly Wiggly, if so, then I hope the bike incentive program works...
"To be fair, now that I think of it, I think most of the stores have moved out to the edge of town, a couple miles from campus. Students would probably drive over there. In that case, the bike idea makes a lot of sense," said my sister, Carolyn. Having been returning student at UW-Whitewater from Evansville (grad '05) I can attest that a lot of students bug out of town for the weekend but still hoof it around campus and downtown for their Thursday night rituals. I commuted to UW-W from Evansville. I was one of many "returning" adult students a lot of colleges would like to enroll to expand their student base. As such, like it or not, some accomodation for out-of-town automobiles has to be taken into account in campus planning. But if I were living in Whitewater, a bicycle would certainly have been helpful. DJ --- "B.C. Brown" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Heard this on the radio yesterday.
