Preliminary design of the US 51 freeway project in Dane County from
Reardon Road to County V/Grinde Road will be discussed at a public
information meeting on February 27, 2008, the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation (WisDOT) announced today.

The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Deforest Middle
School Building cafeteria area, 404 Yorktown Road, in Deforest.

WisDOT is proposing to reconstruct US 51 as a 4-lane divided freeway
with interchanges. The existing two lanes will be reconstructed and an
additional two lanes added east of existing US 51 to create a 4-lane
divided freeway from Reardon Road to Windsor Road. From Windsor Road to
County V (Mueller Road), all four lanes will be built east of existing
US 51 to allow existing US 51 to be used as a frontage road. From County
V (Mueller Road) to County V (Grinde Road), the two new lanes will be
constructed west of existing US 51. The new 4-lane divided highway will
transition back to two lanes just north of County V (Grinde Road).

Interchanges are proposed at Windsor and County V/Mueller Roads, with
under or overpasses proposed at Duraform, Vinburn, and Grinde roads.

Construction is planned to begin sometime in 2012 and will consist of
multiple stages and construction years. US 51 will remain open to
traffic while new lanes are constructed, then transferred onto the new
lanes.

The February 27 meeting will be conducted in an open house format with a
variety of exhibits and maps available for review. A brief presentation
will take place at 6 p.m. Representatives from WisDOT will be on hand to
answer questions throughout the evening. Attendees will have the option
of making written or verbal comments during the gathering.
