I found an interesting posting at Streetsblog
(http://www.streetsblog.org/2008/03/06/bike-network-20/):

Boston, which has a reputation as one of the worst cities in the U.S. for
transportation biking, has hired a bike coordinator and is a building a
bike network from scratch.

To figure out where to put the bike routes, they are asking the city's
bikers for input: they can log onto a Google Map of Boston and trace the
routes they ride. They can also add comments about the routes they use.

I think bicycles and web-based networking, if used right, can both be
tools to create a more convivial and livable community; so it's really
nice to see them used together.
