I am starting a new email list for bicycle advocacy alerts. The intro email
for the list and the first posting went out today. Please note that I WILL NOT
be cross-posting the information from this list to bikies, but that it will
appear in the www.madvelocity.com forums. I am cross-posting this intro email
in case there are members of bikies who would like to subscribe to the new
list. To subscribe or unsubscribe, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject
line "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" as appropriate.

Welcome to Dane County Bicycle Alert!
You have received this email because you are a bicycle enthusiast in Dane
County. This email list is being created for the following purpose: to improve
the dissemination of local bicycle advocacy information and, hopefully, thereby
increase the participation in local bicycle advocacy.

Facts about this email list:
1. This list is a one-way distribution of information. It is NOT a discussion
forum. Posts to this list will also be posted at www.madvelocity.com in the
"Advocacy and Road Safety" forum. You may undertake discussion there if you
feel the need. You are welcome to read the information from this list only at
www.madvelocity.com if you'd rather not get these emails. Just send me an email
to unsubscribe (see below).
2. The frequency of these alerts will depend on the frequency with which issues
arise. My goal will be to send no more than one email per day, and no less than
one per month. Reality will probably fall between those two extremes.

3. I am undertaking this project as an individual and the project has no
affiliation to any other group. My goal is to bring advocacy information to as
broad a group of bicyclists and bicycling friends as possible.

4. Submissions are welcome. Email your issue or event to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
I will consider sending it to the group. I will be the sole person who decides
what and what is not posted to the group. You are welcome to plead your case
to me for a submission and I will try to be open-minded, but ultimately, I
decide what is posted. If you harass me or flame out at me because you don't
agree with me or don't like the way I run the list, I will block your email
account.

5. Alerts will include information that affects Dane County bicyclists. I will
seek to keep the information of an advocacy nature (don't send me notices for
your fundraising ride or training ride) and as closely related to bicycling as
possible (whether something is related to bicycling will be at my discretion)
and may include
* Notices about public meetings
* Requests to send letters, emails, or calls to officials
 * Requests for volunteers for advocacy efforts
 * Requests related to political campaigns for pro-bike candidates. It is at
my sole discretion to determine when this is appropriate. Feel free to plead
your case for your favorite candidate to me or why someone is not pro-bike (see
#4 about submissions and my anti-flaming policy)

Why am I qualified to do this and why should you listen to information sent
from me? You may or may not know me, but I've been knocking around Wisconsin
bicycle advocacy for about five years now. I have been a bicycle commuter for
about 15 years. I am a professional transportation planner at the University of
Wisconsin, formerly worked in bicycle/pedestrian planning in Indiana, and I am
the former executive director of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin. I am
treasurer for the Wheels for Winners Earn-a-Bike board of directors. I hold a
master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning. I am a certified League Cycling
Instructor for the League of American Bicyclists and I teach multiple classes
each year. I am a member of the Thunderhead Alliance (and former board
member), Rails-to-Trails, the Association of Bicycle Pedestrian Professionals,
and the American Planning Association. I write a weekly column on bicycling at
www.dane101.com called "BIY, Bike-It-Yourself."

Thanks to all of you for bicycling and for your interest in local bicycle
advocacy. I hope this list becomes a useful exchange of information in order to
advance bicycling issues in Dane County.
