Indeed, I much prefer bike traffic jams than motorized traffic jams.

And I consider the fact that there IS bike parking at 222 W Washington
a personal success as well.

There was a project of Bike Fed's a few years back where I attended
meetings at that building on a regular basis. Tom Huber - DOT ped-bike
coordinator - also biked to the meetings. I pointed out to the
organization hosting the meetings that there were no bike racks. They
checked with building management, and found out there were racks in
the garage. (Fence racks, but that's a different issue.)

Obviously, anyone arriving for a meeting would have no idea those
racks existed, and they aren't easy to find. I wrote to building
management (Fiore Company) and explained the problem, suggesting
several locations out front where racks could easily be installed. I
got a reply thanking me for the input. I think no one had ever pointed
out that visitors need bike parking too.

When Sonya Newenhouse and her company were hired to do transportation
demand management consulting for the building, she and I had a long
talk about the same issue. "Oh, yes, Fiore told me that they
definitely want and need racks out front.", she said. So I met her
over there and measured spaces and figured out what types of racks
would be appropriate.

It makes me very happy to not only see the racks out front, but to see
them so well used. (There are additional places I suggested for racks,
but at least some got installed.)

Sometimes bike parking issues can be easily resolved, but people who
use the space need to speak up. Because Network 222 existed as an
office building prior to our current zoning code, they were not
required by the city to install racks. But it's so simply, and serves
so many people. But since building owners or managers may not be
bicyclists, they don't know that the current situation is no adequate.
That's where we as customers or clients need to let them know.
