Not to go overboard with the New York Times references, but Thomas
Friedman's Sunday column talks intelligently about what the US can learn
from Denmark about policy to promote prudent energy use. Says Friedman,
about bicycle usage in Copenhagen, "if I lived in a city that had
dedicated bike lanes everywhere, including one to the airport, I’d go to
work that way, too."
That might be a first for an (Iraq war supporting) New York Times
columnist. I'll bet Transportation Alternatives folks are snipping that
column as we speak.
The article has lots of good quotes from Connie Hedegaard, Denmark’s
minister of climate and energy. In the land of $10 gasoline, they are
responding to the end of the oil age with *increased* taxes on fossil
fuels. They will use the increased revenue for personal income tax
relief. This is just right: anti-incentives for energy gluttony, not
subsidies and incentives.
