WIPAN Friends (and a few others) - Below is an email from another list I'm on. It seemed particularly appropriate for the WIPAN list, as the letter speaks directly to the effects of our transportation decisions on individual and public health.
Please pass this on to other individuals or groups that might be interested in signing on to the Safe Routes to School National Partnership letter. Robbie Webber Green Streets Madison www.greenstreetsmadison.org [begin forwarded email] The Safe Routes to School National Partnership is circulating an organizational sign-on letter asking Congress to include performance-based outcomes for health in the next transportation bill. This will provide a strong foundation for the consideration of complete streets, walking and bicycling, transit-oriented design, and more. Americans currently spend nearly five times as much on health care costs related to physical inactivity, traffic injuries and deaths, and poor air quality—all of which are directly related to our transportation system—than the federal government spends on transportation infrastructure. By building public health outcomes into the next transportation bill, walking and bicycling, health, and the environment will all benefit. Several of your organizations have already signed on. For those who are not yet on board, please take a look and consider joining the letter. Please also consider circulating to your local affiliates and partners, as we're looking for local, state and national signers. You can also access the letter on our website at http://www.saferoutespartnership.org/national/45755/45848. The deadline for signing on is October 31, 2008. Thanks for your consideration—and please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Margo Pedroso Policy Manager Safe Routes to School National Partnership P.O.
