This is the good new/bad news of increased cycling. The stakes are going up - for cyclists, motorists and cities - and each of these groups must contribute to the solution. Every so often it takes an article like this to highlight some of the more "inconvenient" problems of increased cycling. I'm not a big fan of helmet laws at this time but I am a big fan of helmets and efforts to promote helmet use - and the helmet use statistics presented are quite compelling.

Frankly, if the cops started enforcing cyclist traffic laws the effort would last only slightly longer than a crackdown on jay-walking. However, it would give them an awareness of cyclists that most of them probably don't have now. Mix in a bit of education and decent road design and who knows what might happen.
