This is the good new/bad news of increased cycling. The stakes are
going up - for cyclists, motorists and cities - and each of these groups
must contribute to the solution. Every so often it takes an article
like this to highlight some of the more "inconvenient" problems of
increased cycling. I'm not a big fan of helmet laws at this time but I
am a big fan of helmets and efforts to promote helmet use - and the
helmet use statistics presented are quite compelling.
Frankly, if the cops started enforcing cyclist traffic laws the effort
would last only slightly longer than a crackdown on jay-walking.
However, it would give them an awareness of cyclists that most of them
probably don't have now. Mix in a bit of education and decent road
design and who knows what might happen.
