Subject: Complaint - Bus 573

The following happened approx 20 minutes ago, so about 3:45 pm on Thurs, 11/20:

I was traveling west on my bicycle down Proudfit St & upon crossing W
Washington, where it turns into Regent, a bus w/the # 573 passed me & did not
provide me the 3 feet of clearance provided under State law. I purposefully
took up the lane at that intersection because of the crossing islands & the
lack of any type of shoulder & the street narrows. I would assess the clearance
provided was approximately 1.5 feet, which if I had not been a more confident
cyclist, could have been hazardous & was a dangerous maneuver.

I am always very disappointed when I see this type of behavior by any driver,
but especially from our city buses due to their mass. Please remind the driver
of that bus that there is a State law that mandates a safe distance of 3 feet
upon passing a bicyclist & if no shoulder or if the street narrows, it's within
a cyclist's right to overtake the lane.

Thank you.
