Dear John,
There is nothing wrong with a union if it simply demands the
productivity payments earned for and by its members. But it is equally
reasonable that they cannot raise costs above the level of truck
delivery. But then a bike union might provide stability to employment
which might be a problem with bike delivery in general. I would expect
the employment turnover is gigantic. But then the overall cost to
enter such a field as a private company or as a sub of the major parcel
companies is low and therefore if labor became demanding and not worth
the business effort there would be no bargaining power.

Dear John,
And another thought: UPS has a little known service where they simply
drop their ground delivery packages off at the United States Post
Office. It is so little known the regional UPS in my area didn't know
they did that when my package went missing. My point is that to avoid
the union trouble, and become competitive, an independent bike delivery
might contract at a local level just like a local qualifying US Post
Office. That would be harder for the Union to fight and would allow
bike delivery a chance. After all, with those trucks they simply "jet"
through my neighborhood, delivering ten times the packages of a bike.
Pay, to be economic must be in line with productivity.

One other postscript I can
think of. I would expect that the bean counters would find it hard to
make this fly except in exceptional places and times if the bike people
claim equal pay and benefits as regular union UPS drivers. And the
Union will not let the Company siphon off significant delivery business
from their Union divers to temp delivery people. -----but any inroads
toward bike delivery is great.

I would expect
that they save more than the fuel savings by paying the bike people
same as their Christmas temp "run to the house people." Not
permanent--not union. But that would be how it should be. That is a
flexible open market for labor. And that is good for the bicycle.
