Sorry this email is getting to you so late. I hope that you have a good meeting
with Randy Hawke tomorrow. I'm assuming that you have seen the emails with PSA
content suggestions that have been sent to bikies thus far. Below is a summary
from Friday's meeting of the input folks had about the PSA:
First non-content thoughts that were raised during the group discussion:
-It was agreed that who the "voice" is should be carefully thought out- perhaps
someone well known to WJJO listeners
-Perhaps (4) 30-second spots makes more sense than (2) 60-second spots.
-We are hoping that this marks the beginning of a progressive stance towards
all road users from WJJO, and hopefully they want to get involved in sponsoring
some community events... Bike-to-Work Week, AIDS ride etc.
-It was even proposed that some folks from WJJO might want to try cycling
themselves :) ("talk the talk, ride the ride").
Here are the suggestions for content (in no particular order) that were brought
up during Friday's meeting- please note that most of these were individuals'
ideas, and don't necessarily represent the entire group's opinions... just
wanted to get each person's ideas down:
Each time we use the road (cycling, driving, etc) we need to put other people's
safety above our own convenience- no matter what.
Reminding folks that cyclists are real people- maybe even someone you know and
love- "Don't hit that cyclist... that is my _____ (son, daughter, mom, dad,
neighbor etc.)"
Equal rights, equal responsibilities- We lay claim to our equal rights on the
road, and to the road, AND we acknowledge our equal responsibilities (as
operators of vehicles (2-wheeled or 4-)
A catchphrase for cyclists on par with the motorcyclists' "loud pipes save
lives"... something to the effect of "be seen and not hit"
Trying to keep the message broad, not wanting to pit drivers against cyclists
or split cyclists from pedestrians
A reminder for drivers that "you don't see what you aren't looking for...
always watch for cyclists on the road"
Remember that everyone on the road should be following the rules of the road
"Put yourself on other people's wheels"- have auto drivers' think from the
perspective of cyclists and vice versa
Somehow encouraging more people to ride bikes! This would be a great message
and we know that sometimes it takes being a cyclist to have respect for other
cyclists
Focusing on dooring- educating non-cyclists about the dangers and reality of
having a door swing open on a passing cyclist
