Also at the Board of Public Works on June 3 is a public hearing to consider a rebuilding of Blackhawk Rd on the far west side. (Blackhawk is the next east-west road north of Old Sauk Rd, and the next through east-west road south of Hwy 14.) The project is from Pleasant View Rd to the edge of the City of Madison limits (just past Rose Ct on the north.) This is the northern boundary of the Blackhawk Neighborhood. Just past the end of this project - by about 600 feet - is a proposed new elementary school in Middleton-Cross Plains School District, which some Madison kids attend. The project is mostly to rebuild the road to "urban standards," that is with curb and gutter, and a sidewalk on the Madison side. The other side of the road is Town and City of Middleton. The proposed rebuilt width is 30 feet. That would allow enough space to put in bike lanes, or at least allow a wide enough space for motorists and bicyclists to share. Some property owners don't think bike lanes are needed, because "there's no bicyclists out there." This is an argument that we have heard before, and has two logical faults. 1. As this area develops, more and more people will be traveling this road, including bicyclists. With a school so close by, it is essential to build the road right the first time. 2. On some developed streets, such as Midvale Blvd, or E Washington before reconstruction, there are few bicyclists (rarely none) because the conditions are very bike-unfriendly. Adding bike lanes will make it easier for bicyclists to get where they are going. Please either write to Christy Bachmann in the Engineering Dept - [email protected] - and ask that your comments be passed on to the Board of Public Works, or come to the hearing and speak in favor of building a road that will safely and comfortably accommodate all road users. You can also email the alder for the area - Paul Skidmore - at [email protected] Paul has generally been supportive of bicycle-pedestrian projects, so you can thank him for his past support as well, but it's always good to make sure you voice your support and not assume things will pass.
