Streetsblog has an interesting article (http://www.streetsblog.org/2009/06/02/using-the-hive-mind-to-make-biking-safer/) about the use of social media to share information about bicycling conditions.
The coolest example in the article is a website called bikewise (http://www.bikewise.org/), which shows bike hazards, crashes and thefts anywhere in the country on a Google-based map. The application is new, and generally unpopulated, but if you zoom in on the Madison area, you'll see a cluster of hazards, reported by UW Commuter Solutions. Anyone can get a logonid on this site, and anyone with a logonid can report hazards, crashes and thefts. I hope this site catches on with the Madison bicycle community; next winter, perhaps I can log into bikewise before I ride to work, to see where the snowbanks and ice patches are on the bike paths. _______________________________________________ Bikies mailing list [email protected] http://lists.danenet.org/listinfo.cgi/bikies-danenet.org
