He appears to have been a homelss person with a drinking
problem. He had been charged
for OWI at least 5 times and has many UW arrests associated with
trespassing and alcohol
use.
A Cap Times article from 12/24/2007:
Alleged burglar arrested after school break-in
A school break-in prompted a strong police response early today,
but the alleged burglar
was arrested peacefully.
Madison police said a custodian at La Follette High School, 702
Pflaum Road, reported
an alarm shortly after midnight. Police established a perimeter around
building until about
8:55 a.m., when David W. Nieft, 43, was seen leaving the building. He
was arrested without
incident.
